Going home

6th August 2022

I had to get up early. When I was walking around downstairs, it was like the opening scene from Home Alone. People were moving with purpose. Bags were being filled and moved strategically towards the front door. I decided to take my time with breakfast and enjoy it.

I knew the drive would be long. I braced myself and made sure my favourite toys were in reach. We were the first to leave and everyone waved us off.

It only took two hours to reach the ferry port. I was surprised until I heard that we were leaving from Cherbourg and not Dieppe (which is where we boarded). Annoyingly, our super speedy ferry was two hours late. Because of this, we had to drive the car on very quickly.

Okay so seats were not great, it was annoying to get onto the boat … but boy it was very fast. I liked being outside with mum and dad. The sea looked great and the wind power was very strong; this boat was cutting through the waves.

We got to Poole - which looked lovely- still two hours behind. It took forever to get through immigration as there were only 4 boots with UK immigration officials in them. We had a lovely lady check our passports and I gave her a little wave as we left.

The drive home was uneventful. We went down the A34 which I heard my dad said he loved. With only 30 minutes to go I was bored and had enough. I am not proud of myself, but I started to scream. The result was that I got to watch my favourite TV … which was great.

Once home I was tired. I therefore left my dad to empty the car, grandma to get fish and chips and mum to get me ready for bed. I decided to go to bed early so mum could enjoy her fish and chips.

I have loved my holiday … I just wish France was a little closer.

Another lazy day in, Vire-Normandy and cars

3rd August

I enjoyed yesterday. I got to play in the pool and generally destroy things around this big house. The house was not like mine at home. There were no carpets downstairs; it was either tiled or stone. This hurt a little when I fell over but I didn’t do it often. Grandma and grandad slept downstairs near to the bathroom, shower and a toilet room. Upstairs, all the bedrooms were in a long line. It was fun walking through them and into the games room. My bed room was at the opposite end to the games room, next to the upstairs toilet and shower. My dad loved the shower; it was a rain shower… whatever that meant.

Today the rest of the family did go out. Grandma and grandad went to a city called Rouen and everyone else went to some mountain with a billion people. Even my parents had been out quickly before I awoke. They had gone to the bakery again for bread and cakes … including my escargo chocolate for breakfast . I approved.

Today I finally got pool time with no chance of splashing. I spent a lovely hour relaxing in the pool. I even got to swim without my dad holding me. After the hour though I was ready to get out. Also my dad said something about UV and sunburn which sounded painful but I didn’t really understand it. All I knew was that we were going inside.

Being the middle of the day, I felt time had come for a sleep. Apparently, quite a few French and Spanish people do this too, which made perfect sense to me. I love jumping, so I need a lot of energy.

I awoke to find that my parents had played a game, read and ate lunch. It was now time for the pool again apparently and, though I enjoyed it, I only wanted 30mins this time before I wanted to get out. This worked out well as a lot of my family returned, looking as red as a shrimp and tired. Mum, dad and I played in the garden before heading inside to read some books.

My parents went in the pool a final time but I wasn’t interested. When you can pull soil out of a flowerpot, why swim? Finally dinner time was upon us. I had something lovely which I don’t know the name of, before my grandad gave me a bottle of milk. I decided that tonight I would take myself off to bed as no one else looked as they would… they were too busy talking. My mum eventually put me to bed.

4th August

Having gone to bed early I got up early. Having read somewhere that adults get too much sleep, I decided to wake my parents up! We were first downstairs for breakfast!

I thought that we were having another restful day but no. I was soon being picked up by my mum and being put in the car. Today it was just me, mum and dad. I leaned forward out of my car seat to try and hear where we were going. A place called Vire-Normandy apparently. My dad was a little nervous as it was his second time driving on the wrong side of the road … but I felt that he did okay. Anyway it wasn’t long before we had arrived and parked in a massive car park.

With the car park being free my parents were delighted however I was sceptical. If it’s free, usually it’s boring. Things started okay. The first road we walked up had butterfly bunting across the street. This street went up hill to the town’s central roundabout. Six roads lead of this roundabout. To my right was a very old castle turret, where French people were sitting down having a coffee. I got pushed around the town in my pushchair. It was okay; there was a great toy shop … biggest shop in town I reckon!

Before leaving we went to a bakery and bought lunch. I had my favourite escargo chocolate swirl cake. We ate outside looking at the turret.

Once back in the car we went to, what was going to be, our final giant supermarket. Dad bought a lot of chocolate. After my dad broke the till we left and I was happy to see the back of food shopping.

We made it back to the cottage around 2pm. We went into the pool again which was good fun until Family returned. One moment I was having a lovely peaceful swim … then my dad was using me as cover as he and mum had a ‘water flight’ with water pistols. THEN other family members joined in. I decided to leave when Rebecca and Jack entered the pool fully clothed. Jack had a pair of apple ear pods in his pocket… I had no idea they were waterproof. Weird thing was, after the pool fight they spent the night in a glass of rice. Adults are weird sometimes.  I don’t think that I will be asking for a pool for Christmas.

It had been another lovely day

5th August

So we were heading back to Vire-Normandie. Why I hear you ask? Well grandma and grandad wanted to have a look and today was market day. Dad parked in the same car park as previously but, as soon as he parked, the car died. We couldn’t lock the car. From the looks of it, I felt that the smaller 12v battery had died and the car had shut itself down for safety; but no one asked for my opinion. Grandma waited for a handsome French RAC driver to show, dad got some chips and I went with grandad and mum for a coffee.

The battery was soon recharged and grandma and dad met up with us. Grandma and grandad went around the city. Mum, dad and I went around the market. I then fell asleep therefore mum and dad went for dinner where they had creps.

After lunch it looked as though we were returning to the cottage but no, we made a quick stop in the stunning village of Les Monts d’Aunay. All buildings - including the huge cathedral- were made out of a beautiful white stone. All roofs were of this grey tile. It was a lovely quiet village to just walk around, take photos and buy our last set of cakes from a bakery.

Once back at the cottage I had my final swim before going inside for a meal. I haven’t made my mind up about swimming. I thought it was okay but I didn’t enjoy swimming for long … and I hated drinking the water by mistake. We had a family photo before closing the pool and enjoying our last meal.

As I went to bed to read my book I went upstairs happy. I had enjoyed my holiday and I really liked France.

Lazy day in

2nd August 2022

The weather has turned a little so that it was very hot. Mum and dad decided to stay in… and I gave a nod of approval. We were lounging around in the pool. I was getting use to the water. I was really enjoying it because, this time, I wasn’t splashed in the face. I was finding it very peaceful … but then my cousins came into the pool too. I gave a very quizzical look as I thought that they were going out however, their adults had decided to stay at home too. At first, I wasn’t too happy at sharing my pool with them however, they didn’t splash me like they did yesterday; therefore, all was well in my world. I swam with my mum and dad for another half an hour.

By now, the sun was really hot and high in the sky. I ran up to the door and knocked. Finally I was let in by grandma. Thankful to be in the shade, I read books before having lunch. I decided to have a little snooze in the afternoon.

By the time I awoke, the sun had retreated enough to make playing outside possible. I played with a ball my mum had found here. One cousin had brought a red moon ball … which I loved.

Dinner was my favourite; pizza edges and pasta. After this I stayed up a little longer before going to bed at 11pm.

Pools, beaches and cakes

DAY 3 - 31st July

Happy birthday mum! Today mum got a lovely cake and many cards! It was great to have a birthday while on holiday.

Today, mum and dad had found the blinds to my room therefore, I managed to sleep in. Once up I went downstairs for ‘ 1st breakfast’ which was similar to home … but It was a little different. I overheard someone say that we were in France so maybe that was the reason for the differences.

All of my cousins were playing in our huge garden. Some were in the pool, others playing table tennis but I … was heading to the car. I normally like the car, but this time I think I would have preferred to play. Luckily the drive wasn’t long and we were soon at a lovely French village. Mum pushed me into something called a patisserie. I normally don’t like shopping but this shop was interesting; bread and cakes as far as my eyes could see. I indicated that I wanted a chocolate swirl cake and my dad acknowledged. After this we went to a boring supermarket before going back to our place. I ate my whole cake.. which was the size of my head! It was delicious.

I then felt sleepy. I decided to have a snooze, not knowing that I would be asleep for 2 to 3 hours. Mum and dad had lunch, played a game, played table tennis and relaxed. When I woke up, it was time for dinner which aunty Caroline had cooked. This was my mums special birthday dinner and I was enjoying it … until 13 adults started singing in one terrible voice “happy birthday “. I don’t have a problem with the song … it’s the “hurray” afterwards. It was so loud and scary that I cried a lot.

It had been a lovely day; so much so that I decided to stay up until midnight… which my mum and dad were happy about.

DAY 4 - I awoke ready for another day of playing however, mum and dad had other ideas. After breakfast we got in the car. We headed to something called a cinema. The rest of the family went in whereas mum, dad and me went down the hill and into the town. I have been told that cinemas are very dark with loud noises. It didn’t sound much fun so I couldn’t understand why so many people went in!

What was fun was the hamburger and chips mum spotted when in the town. The chips were lovely and so was the hamburger… but mum and dad would not give me a single bite of that juicy hamburger… I just overheard them stating it was so. I’ll remind them of this in ten years time. I then got to have a walk along the front. This is where I met the rest of the family who had been to the cinema. Compared to how much I normally walk, I only walked a little way. As I did I checked the sea wall to make sure it was fine. After the safety inspection, I got in my pushchair and went to bed. Apparently my parents had a cake when I was asleep… which wasn’t fair.

I was awoken 90 minutes later as my dad put me in the car. Off we went to a giant supermarket! I hate shopping but, this shop being foreign, did stop me from my usual tactic of crying so my parents would hurry up. Once we put all our bags in the car it was time to head back to the cottage.

Mum and dad were cooking so I played with grandma. Dinner was lovely (carbonara) but I still didn’t feel sleepy; even with just a 90 minute snooze. I therefore stayed up until midnight again

I love holidays
